WHO IN SIERRA LEONE
WHO has been in Sierra Leone since 1961 supporting immunization campaigns, emergency relief and human resources development. On October 20, 1961, the first Programme of Technical Cooperation between Sierra Leone and WHO was signed.
WHO’s inputs since then have focused on the following areas:
- Health sector reform
- District health systems development
- Human resources for health development
- Disease Prevention and Control
- Essential drugs
- Epidemic response and emergency preparedness
- Childhood diseases
- Reproductive Health
- Specialized Services: Laboratory, mental health, disability, prevention and rehabilitation, health legislation, safe blood supply and
- HIV/AIDS.
WHO support is provided through technical assistance (short-term consultants) and direct financial contributions to activities within the areas mentioned above.
To optimise the use of available resources and increase the impact of WHO support, the programme of Technical Cooperation is concentrating on the following areas:
- Support to the health sector reform and promotion of district health system
- Human resources for health
- Disease Prevention and Control
- Strengthening of epidemiological work
- Reproductive health
- Health and the environment
